“om mani padme hum"
(Sanskrit)
"Hail to the jewel in the lotus"
This unique process adds to their distinctiveness and spiritual significance.
The bowls are handmade using a meticulous process that begins with selecting the right combination of metals. They are crafted from copper, tin, and eight noble metals, including (Ag), (Ni), (Cd), (Ru), (Pd), (Pt), (Cr), (Mn). The specific percentages of these metals, along with the diameter and thickness of the bowls, contribute to the unique sound and overtone of each bowl.
The production of these hammered singing bowls is labour intens and entirely manual. Skilled craftsmen carefully hammer each bowl into shape through various stages to achieve the correct form and a pure tone. The process starts with melting the metals in a furnace, with copper and tin forming the primary components for bronze bowl with small amounts of the other metals also added.
Once the metals are melted, the molten mixture is poured into a mold, from which discs of different diameters and thicknesses are cut.
These discs are then hand-hammered into the desired shape and size after being precisely measured and classified by weight.
The discs are heated in the furnace until red-hot, then hammered one by one into bowl shapes using a mold. This step is crucial, as the metal must remain red-hot to avoid becoming brittle and cracking.
After achieving the rough shape, the bowls undergo a fine finishing process. At this stage, they are reheated and hammered again to achieve the exact shape and sound. Finally, each bowl is meticulously sanded, polished, and chiseled to perfection.
All our handmade singing bowls are sorted by weight, with the mentioned diameter serving as a first indication of the bowl's size. The careful craftsmanship, combined with the full moon tradition and unique engravings, makes each bowl not only a musical instrument but also a piece of art with deep spiritual significance.
